Balance: a myth or worthy pursuit?

Does life balance exist?  Is it achievable? If you did achieve balance, would it excite you?

This morning I watched a video of a very successful personal development personality call balance “boring”.  The promo video had me hooked.  I thought to myself, “WHAT!” I found the link and spent 10 minutes listening to the opinion of a someone who had made a claim almost completely counter to my belief of what balance would provide once achieved.

In this video, the pursuit of balance was called elusive and the word balance was redefined to mean control, and this redefinition is what then makes it worthwhile.  The remainder of the video discussed tips on how to live at the highest levels of performance with shifting seasons and focus.  So once it was said and done, I agreed with the tips and strategies to gain control that were recommended.

If all endeavors in life have a constant value and equal distribution of effort and focus, that might lead to a pretty vanilla balance.  I would submit that life is too dynamic for a modern definition of balance to be so lock step.  Rather I think that having a balanced foundation of health and wellness is the balance life is built upon. This foundation is made from a combination of nutrition, fitness, sleep and stress management.

I emphasize the word ‘combination’ because the balance will be different for each person based on their individual needs during the season or phase of life they are in.  If things are particularly stressful because life has thrown two fist-fulls of crap to deal with at you, then stress management might be the primary ingredient to balance, but the other components are natural companionship. Their presence and proportionality will be necessary because of basic needs and requirements, including measuring a null value when they are not present, then imbalance occurs.

Creating a solid foundation with the critical components of health and wellness as daily habits will allow you to go forth and have better control of your life.  This control will allow you to manage all the diverse endeavors, side hustles and major projects that you have underway.  It will allow you to have more meaningful and intentional interactions with your family, friends and others who may depend on you being present and in control.

Is balance an obtainable and worthwhile objective? Yes, find balance in your foundation of health and wellness, it will not be boring.  It will be enriching and exciting to see what works in the right combinations.  Set a great foundation of habits and see your level of achievement and resilience to life’s obstacles increase.

Life isn’t easier, our ability to deal with outside stimulus becomes greater.  Up level your health and wellness habits for a strong foundation, that strong foundation will provide balance to build your dreams upon.
